Indian head massage is a relaxing holistic treatment that uses acupressure massage on the head, face, neck and shoulders. It aims to rebalance your body's energies. This form of massage focuses on the three higher "chakras" - mind, body and spirit and as such hits your energy epicentre. It doesn't seem sufficient to say that a good, long Indian head massage (involving proper neck and shoulder and back massage as well) will relax you. It's more than this. It should actually make you feel detached and serene, and leave you sighing and wordless. It's claimed the treatment increases the circulation and improves the function of the lymphatic system responsible for getting rid of toxins. The head is the home-base for your entire nervous system, so a soothed head is a soothed body. That's why we instinctively rub our head when we feel under strain.
The massage itself is not unlike having your hair washed at the salon, but with some unexpected variation. Expect to have your ears tugged and a series of knocks, taps and pats gently drummed against your temples. The head, neck, shoulders, upper back and upper arms are all massaged – the very areas in which we tend to hold tension.
